A Week in Outfits | Frickin Hot Summer Edition
It’s frickin hot out. I’m here today to demystify Canadian weather and motivate myself to pull any fashion inspiration I can from the heat. Please enjoy my week in outfits, all photos taken before the clothes were dripping in sweat and melting sunscreen.
Enjoy.
Monday
I was in trouble the minute I saw this swimsuit. “I’d be swimming in the Emerald City”, I told myself, and I stand by that statement. After I made it mine last weekend, Monday was spent half on the beach and half in the car on my way home from the beach. Since I’m assuming you have no interest in seeing the lounge shorts and 8 year old WE Day t-shirt I wore on the drive home, I’m counting this as the first look of this very steamy week. I’ve been slathering self tanner on every night for this exact occasion and felt ever so cute with these hand-me-down embroidered denim shorts. Just a taste of fa-shun from these retro sunnies made for a “chef’s kiss” beach day look.
Tuesday
Tuesday was spent mainly in air conditioning. Hence, covering the entirety of my legs. This summer look was inspired by a street style picture of Leandra Medine Cohen I pinned long ago. If she could wear it in the New York heat, surely I could manage. The day was semi successful temperature wise (a modest 31°), I did, however, stain my white cami with dark brown hair die mid afternoon. I spent the rest of the work day feeling the hardened fabric (spraying hairspray on the stain stops it from spreading) bouncing on my stomach. Regardless, I love the billowy trousers with my chunky Dr. marten’s, and the fact that everything I wore allowed breezes to flow through led me to have no regrets.
In case you were worried, the stain has since come out (insert praying hands emoji).
Wednesday
On hump day I was once again in the safety of AC, which allowed me to whip out a true treasure in my wardrobe. This dress was my Nana’s summer go to in the 70s. It’s the only maxi dress I own for everyday use, and yet I do not wear it nearly as much as it deserves. Of course, this could be worn in the colder months as well. I’m picturing woven tights and knee high boots underneath. Or perhaps wearing it as a vest rather than a dress over jeans of a similar wash. I’ve reached that point in the summer where I start dreaming of Fall and I’m very much getting ahead of myself. For this summer day I wanted to keep things simple, to let the dress shine. A pair of metallic gold espadrilles were the perfect mate.
Thursday
Online lectures and hours spent at the keyboard were my big Thursday plans. In all honesty I expected to pose for this mirror selfie and swiftly take off this translucent dress. It just didn’t feel realistic for the amount of comfort the day was demanding. But the afternoon came and went and I never took it off. In fact, I caught myself checking out the dress in the hallway mirror every time I went for a pee break. I almost gave this dress away a few months ago (check out the blog post I wrote on this), concluding it was a little too Molly Goddard for my style. I think she’s absolutely brilliant, but the ruffles have always felt impractical for every day. Oh, to be so wrong. This ruffled, technically useless piece of clothing has brought me joy and the thrill of new love, this boiling Thursday evening. I presume it will get much more love throughout the remainder of this heat wave.
Friday
Friday hit 40 degrees for the first time this summer. Though I tried my very best to stay breezy in this final look, I surrendered to a bikini by mid afternoon. I do love the dance of warm tones in this look, though. Red and camel will always strike a chord with me, and the addition of these yellow Rag & Bone sandals hits my necessary daily dose of snake print. The week only grew hotter, but I must say, I feel the looks followed suit and kept up just fine.
Thanks for reading.
