My Favourite Places on the Internet
I am truly exhausted of my own emotions. So when I put up an Instagram poll asking whether you wanted a Skin post or Reflections post - and you screamed Reflections - I knew I didn’t want to look inward and discuss my own life. Instead, I want to hype up the voices who make me smile and give me (dare I say) hope, in these terribly turbulent times. The internet is a confusing, arguably extremely terrible place, but there are a few beams of light that don’t make me want to smash my phone and curl up in a Hobbit hole. So, on that happy note lets discuss these positive internet destinations!
For Those of Us Who Still Read
Repeller, formerly known as Man Repeller, is the brain child of one of my favourite people on the internet, Leandra Medine Cohen. She can be a bonus favourite in this post, because I am highly obsessed with her style, her humour, and her twins. When I feel like skimming and scanning some words of wisdom, Repeller will never disappoint. Aside from being my biggest inspiration for the content you read right here on emeroo, I find it impossible not to leave their site either laughing in spite of myself, inspired to wear clashing prints and colours in the most outlandishly cool ways, or with an itch to hunt vintage vases. There’s something for everyone!
If psychedelic fashions and hilarity aren’t your speed, perhaps clean, crisp sustainability content will do the trick. The Good Trade is a 2020 discovery of mine that consistently fills my inbox with not only the most gorgeous neutral toned imagery, but written content diving deep into sustainability for your wardrobe, home, beauty routine, health and more. What I love most is the solutions and suggestions are approachable for everyone.
All that Good Good Pre-loved Shopping
I’m not a perfect “ethical fashion lover”, I do partake in a spot of online shopping from time to time (don’t forget, you can sometimes request no plastic packaging when you order!). But when I do, I try to keep it exclusively from vintage or pre-loved stores. I have two tried and tested favourites, The Real Real and Vestiare Collective. Both are pre-loved luxury fashion power houses, and are truly my internet rabbit holes. Wear Not New is a smaller UK based online pre-loved shop. They definitely lean to the vintage side and get the minimalist marketing content just right. I also have to mention another intimate (wink, wink) online vintage shopping experience - by intimate I mean small collections released periodically, primarily made up of the most stunning lingerie EVER. Soroité is doing what they do so well my business mind is tipping my hat and clapping like box seat owner at the opera, while my fashion mind drools over the hand-dyed corsets, reconstructed jewelry, and bold vintage outerwear.
An Account on this App Called Instagram
I think I like Instagram. Sometimes I’m not sure if it brings me joy, or just satisfies some deep seeded desire to be admired. I have an existential thinking session about it weekly, anyone else? One thing I can be sure of is that there is one Insta account that makes me genuinely happy. More Whores of Yore is the visual version of the popular Twitter account educating the erotic nerds of the internet (energetically raises hand). When I peruse her posts it feels like my love for the account is a little secret, kept safe between myself and the app, but the secret is out! I can’t get enough of the ancient statues, art, photographs and anecdotes that give a peak into the sexy days of… well… Yore!
Something for the Ears
16 year old Emily had good taste in a select few things; coats, angsty alt-pop music, and podcasts. Though that should technically be “podcast”, singular, since there was only one she/I listened to back then. I suppose you could say I was pretty ahead of the curve on the podcast trend (insert girl flipping hand emoji). Psychobabble was and still remains one of my top three favourite podcasts. I have a vivid memory of listening to the episode released after Zayn left 1D (GASPS at the memory), on a band trip bus ride in 2015. You may recognize the names of the hosts, Tyler Oakley and Kory Kuhl, from Youtube days of old. They are still killing it, posting every Tuesday for my anxiously awaiting ears. It’s my weekly dose of queer shenanigans. They mix absolute nonsense with truly progressive, well spoken social and political discussions, and I wish I could partake in a group hug with the two of them very badly.
Let me know in the comments below which internet locations give you hope, spark joy, or teach you something profound that makes you feel like a well-functioning human being!
